YouTube will no longer delete videos from dormant accounts.

Google said on Tuesday that dormant accounts will be erased after two years. What about old YouTube accounts? The internet asked.

There’s a wealth of internet history in YouTube’s dusty corners, including accounts of deceased users whose families would likely like access to their digital archives. Though Google will still erase other outdated accounts, the YouTube owner amended its policy to no longer destroy YouTube videos.

“We do not have plans to delete accounts with YouTube videos at this time,” Google clarified. However, to reduce fraud, Google implemented this new dormant account policy. These log-ins are easier to crack, according to the company.

Google stated, “Our internal analysis shows abandoned accounts are at least 10x less likely than active accounts to have 2-step-verification set up.” “This means that these accounts are often vulnerable, and once compromised, they can be used for anything from identity theft to a vector for unwanted or even malicious content, like spam.”

Google would also reduce server expenses by removing some outdated uploads. The Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar) and Google Photos will not be deleted until December 2023.

The process will begin with deleted accounts. Users with previous accounts have plenty of time to go in and ensure they can keep their stuff. According to Google, the activity might be as simple as using Google to log into another app. Before deactivating an account, Google will notify the user via its recovery address.

Many internet fans are relieved that YouTube videos will remain intact, but Google stores so much of people’s memories, from Google Drive to Photos, that some digital artifacts will be lost. Elon Musk, Twitter’s owner, also aims to delete inactive accounts. So back up your important data, as tech companies’ regulations may change.
