Atari has made its return to the video game world with the release of their new console the Ataribox. Atari, who recently celebrated their 40 year anniversary alongside Nintendo, has been out of the gaming business since 1993 with their company having been bought and sold numerous times and their name only appearing only a select few games that the company has helped produce such as Dragon Ball Z, Pac-Man, and Ms. Pac-Man.
Atari first appeared in the video game world with their first console the Atari 2600 home video game console and the company’s career in the video game industry ended in 1993 with their previous console the Jaguar. The company’s new console the Ataribox was teased at this year’s E3 convention, and now Atari has revealed more about their upcoming console. The Ataribox will be available in both wood and black/red finishes, and will feature SD card support, an HDMI port, and four USB ports, the console itself was inspired by the company’s first console the Atari 2600 and the company has stated their objective for the new console up it’s release, “our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.”
Atari has also stated the lineup of games for the console will include classic Atari titles as well as “current content,” so far not much else has been revealed for Atari’s new console, there has been no word of any specific pricing, gaming lineup, or full specifications of the console itself but Atari has stated, “We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing, we’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so.”
As for now that’s everything that has been currently revealed about Atari’s upcoming console but more details are set to be released about the Ataribox later this year, the console will appeal to fans both new and old and may even be able to compete with the top tier contenders in gaming such as Microsoft’s Xbox One, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch. Despite the company having been out of the gaming business for 24 years if this new console appeals to their target audience and provides a suitable amount of games and features this console may be able to put Atari on top of the gaming world. Happy gaming!
