Amazon pulls AI recap of Fallout after errors spotted

Amazon has removed an AI-generated video recap of its hit TV series Fallout after viewers pointed out several factual mistakes in the summary. The tool was being tested on Prime Video to help audiences catch up on shows but has now disappeared from the platform.

The recap, created using artificial intelligence, was introduced in November as an experimental feature for selected English-language Prime Original series in the US. Amazon described it as a way to summarise key plot points using narration, dialogue and music.

Fans of Fallout soon flagged errors in the video recap of the show’s first season. One scene featuring the character The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins, was incorrectly described as a 1950s flashback, when it is actually set in the year 2077. Viewers also said the recap misrepresented an interaction between The Ghoul and protagonist Lucy MacLean, played by Ella Purnell, which could confuse new audiences.

The decision to pause the AI recap feature was first reported by tech publication The Verge. The BBC has contacted Amazon for comment.

The move comes amid wider concerns about inaccuracies produced by generative AI tools. Earlier this year, Apple suspended an AI feature that summarised notifications after repeated errors, including mistakes in news alerts. Google’s AI-generated search summaries have also faced criticism for factual inaccuracies.
