Why Are Nigerian Tech Companies Still Afraid of Gaming?

Nigeria-Can-Export-Gaming-Technology

Nigerian technology companies have shown that they are not afraid of difficult problems. They have built solutions for banks, insurers, retailers, logistics companies, hospitals and government agencies, including sectors once considered too complex or highly regulated.

Yet, mention gaming to some of these same technology founders and developers, and the enthusiasm often fades.

Perhaps part of the problem is perception. Gaming in Nigeria is frequently viewed almost entirely through the lens of betting and gambling. But the industry extends far beyond the betting platform itself. It involves payments, identity verification, cybersecurity, data, artificial intelligence, fraud detection, customer management and regulatory technology.

That became particularly clear to me during the Enugu Gaming Conference 2026. I deliberately wanted a respected Nigerian software professional in the room—not to convince him to become a gaming operator, but to give him an opportunity to see the technology problems surrounding the industry from a different perspective.

EGC2026 itself was built around that broader conversation, bringing together gaming operators, regulators, investors, technology companies and fintech stakeholders under the theme “Code, Capital and Compliance: Unlocking Nigeria’s iGaming Tech Opportunity.”

The experience reminded me of something I learned during my years as a technology journalist. I spent considerable time highlighting opportunities in financial services and encouraging technology companies to pay closer attention to the problems within the sector. As companies began solving those problems, an entire ecosystem of products and businesses emerged.

Technology ecosystems often need someone to connect the dots.

Gaming needs that same conversation.

A technology entrepreneur does not have to become a betting operator to build for gaming. In fact, some of the opportunities may exist outside the betting business altogether. Gaming companies need better payment and reconciliation systems, stronger identity and age verification, fraud detection, cybersecurity, data analytics, compliance tools and customer-service technology.

They also need technology that can help identify unusual activity, improve regulatory reporting and support responsible gaming. These are not unfamiliar challenges for Nigerian technology companies. Similar problems are already being solved across banking, fintech, e-commerce and other industries.

The opportunity is therefore to look beyond the betting shop and examine what is happening underneath it.

A company can build identity and age-verification technology without taking a single bet. It can develop payment infrastructure, cybersecurity systems, analytics platforms or regulatory software. Such products could serve multiple operators and potentially expand beyond Nigeria into other African markets facing similar challenges around payments, identity, fraud, compliance and digital platforms.

But the gaming industry also has a responsibility to make those opportunities visible.

Instead of simply asking what technology can do for gaming, operators and regulators can ask a different question: What problems do we have that Nigerian technology companies can solve?

If fraud is a problem, invite technology companies to solve it. If age verification needs improvement, challenge developers to build better systems. If regulators need more effective ways to collect and analyse information, create opportunities for local technology companies to develop those tools. If payments can be improved, give fintech companies a reason to participate.

Investors, too, can look beyond the familiar gaming business model. The next significant gaming technology company may not be another operator competing for players. It could be a company quietly building infrastructure that dozens of gaming businesses eventually depend on.

That is how technology ecosystems grow: an industry presents a problem, an entrepreneur develops a solution, and that solution can eventually become valuable beyond the industry that created the original demand.

Nigeria’s technology ecosystem may therefore need to look at gaming differently. Building for gaming does not necessarily mean building a betting company. There is an entire technology ecosystem around the industry that remains open to innovation.

For Nigerian founders, developers and investors, the question is worth asking: Why aren’t we building for this market?

The answer may not require another debate about whether gaming matters. It may simply require more technology companies to step into the room, understand the problems and decide which ones they can solve.

Gaming is already creating those problems. The opportunity is for Nigerian technology to start solving them.
