Happy Memorial Day weekend! This Monday, the people of the United States commemorate our veterans and how brave they are for risking their lives to protect our freedom. Here are some video games that will remind just how badass our troops actually are.
- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
If you’re in the mood to pull out an old PC game, this first-person shooter based on WWII is what you should be looking for. Released in 2002, you play as Lt. Matt Powell, a U.S. Army Ranger who was a part of the 1st Ranger Battalion, according to Metacritic. The 1st Ranger Battalion were the first group of American soldiers sent overseas to join the fight in Europe during WWII. Players will be able to use weapons and vehicles from that area, and battle through America’s most iconic WWII battles. This game is available on Amazon for $9.99 or is available as part of a bundle for $22.99.
2. Company of Heroes
The one strategy game to make this list, Company of Heroes lets the player assert control of American soldiers in order to stop German forces. One level the game offers is the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, one of the most iconic battles in WWII history. One feature of this game is it’s A.I. component, where your soldiers will be to adapt to their environment, take cover, or execute strategic attacks, according to the Company of Heroes official website. Released in 2006, this game is available on Steam for $19.99 and in two packages, one that includes the complete Company of Heroes game for $39.99 and one that includes the whole Company of Heroes franchise for $69.99.
3. Call of Duty: World at War
When it comes to games that portray war, Call of Duty is a must on this list. Released in 2008, this game also takes place during WWII, focusing on the fall of the Axis powers. You can play as an American soldier who has been captured by Axis forces and is rescued, according to Steam. This game is available for purchase on Steam for $19.99 and available for Xbox 360 on Amazon for $12.99.
4. Battlefield 1
In newer releases, Battlefield 1 currently seems like the ultimate WWII game, featuring a variety of countries that the players can join for intense multiplayer mode battles that take place all over the world. What gives this game a spot on our list is one of its single-player campaigns. In “Storms of Steel,” the player becomes the Harlem Hellfighters, a group a part of the U.S. Army National Guard sent to France to fight against Germany, according to this gameplay video on YouTube. This game, released in 2016, is currently available on Origin, Xbox One and Playstation 4 for $59.99.
5. Call of Duty: WWII
Although this game has yet to be released, it is one to definitely keep your eyes out for. Boasting a sense of camaraderie and brotherhood, Call of Duty: WWII takes the player into the story of the Americans during WWII. One battle that will be featured is the Battle of the Bulge, according to PVP Live. The Battle of the Bulge was an intense final German attack on Allied forces, being one of the highest casualties for American soldiers during WWII. The Americans, though, were able to defeat the Germans. Plus, a unique add-on to the game is that female soldiers will be featured in the multiplayer, according to Forbes. Call of Duty: WWII is available for pre-purchase on Steam, Xbox One, and Playstation 4 for $59.99.
Remember to take a break from gaming, go outside, thank a veteran or two, and celebrate the bravery and lives of those who have fallen.
