Aptoide Games has become the first third-party app marketplace to be distributed through the Google Play Store in the United States, following changes stemming from the long-running antitrust case between Epic Games and Google.
The development marks a significant shift in Android app distribution. For years, users who wanted alternative app stores generally had to download them separately and sideload them onto their devices. Under the new arrangement, U.S. Android users can find and install Aptoide Games directly through Google Play.
The move follows a series of court-ordered changes to Google’s Android ecosystem after Epic challenged Google’s Play Store practices. Google has since introduced programmes that allow qualifying third-party app stores to participate in the Android distribution system, including access to Play’s catalogue and a dedicated programme for distributing alternative app stores through Google Play.
What Is Aptoide Games?
Aptoide Games is a gaming-focused marketplace operated by Aptoide, the Portugal-based Android app distributor. Unlike the main Google Play Store, which covers a broad range of applications, Aptoide Games concentrates on games and operates as an independent marketplace.
Aptoide has operated as an alternative Android app distribution platform for more than a decade. The company says its marketplace serves around 25 million monthly active users worldwide and provides access to a large catalogue of Android applications and games.
Its arrival on Google Play means users no longer need to change their device’s security settings or go through the traditional sideloading process simply to install the alternative store.
What Changes for Android Users and Developers?
For now, the programme applies to users in the United States. Google says its third-party app-store programmes are part of changes being implemented for U.S. users under the Epic-related legal proceedings.
The change also creates another distribution channel for developers. Google has introduced a system through which participating third-party stores can access listings from the Play catalogue, while developers have mechanisms to opt out.
However, the transition has not been completely frictionless. A U.S. federal judge later ordered Google to make third-party app stores easier to find after concerns were raised about how deeply the new option was buried within the Play Store.
Epic Games Has Yet to Arrive
Despite Epic Games being responsible for the lawsuit that triggered many of these changes, its own Epic Games Store was not the first alternative marketplace to appear on Google Play.
Aptoide Games reached Google Play first, giving users an early look at how Google’s new third-party app-store system will work. Epic’s broader dispute with Google has already produced changes involving alternative payments, external links and app distribution.
The arrival of Aptoide Games could be an early indication of a broader change in Android’s distribution landscape. If additional companies bring their own marketplaces to Google Play, Android users could eventually have more ways to discover and install apps without relying exclusively on Google’s store.
For now, however, Aptoide Games remains the first—and, at launch, the only—third-party app store distributed through Google Play in the United States.
