On Monday, Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) and MediaTek Inc (2454. TW) announced they would collaborate on technologies to enable enhanced vehicle infotainment systems that may stream video or games or interact with drivers using artificial intelligence.

At the Computex technology trade expo in Taipei, MediaTek announced that it would integrate an Nvidia graphic processing unit chipset and software into its system-on-chips for automakers’ infotainment displays.

The firms stated that MediaTek devices with Nvidia software would work with Nvidia-based automated driving systems. For example, while cameras monitor the driver, dashboard displays might depict the vehicle’s surroundings.

“The automotive industry needs strong companies that can work with the industry for decades at a time,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said at a Taipei news conference.

“The quality, strength and positions of our two companies could give the automotive industry partners that they can build their companies on,” he said, adding that the alliance would provide chips to power “every single segment of a car.”
As automakers add gaming, artificial intelligence for voice-activated functions, driver monitoring systems, automated driving displays, in-vehicle displays, and entertainment systems are increasingly complicated.

Qualcomm, MediaTek’s main smartphone competitor, has also been courting automakers. Qualcomm and SalesForce collaborated on a connected vehicle platform earlier this year.

Nvidia’s relationship with MediaTek expands its access to the $12 billion infotainment system-on-chip industry. At the same event, MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai indicated the first products would launch in late 2025.

Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover are Nvidia’s targets. MediaTek specializes in Android smartphone chips and sells Dimensity Auto technology to mass-market vehicle lines.

“There are a lot of segments they are addressing that Nvidia has not addressed,” said Nvidia’s automotive vice president Danny Shapiro. For example, future automobile consumers were not identified.
