Tesla unveiled a Shanghai “Megafactory” yesterday. According to Tesla, the factory will produce 10,000 commercial Megapack battery energy storage devices yearly.

With its Nevada Gigafactory, Tesla creates Megapack energy storage units, car battery packs, and Tesla Energy products like the Powerwall battery. However, like Tesla’s Powerwall, the Megapack is geared for large commercial applications.

Megapack manufacturing is moving to its new Megafactory in Northern California. The first Tesla Megafactory will be in Lathrop, California, near its Fremont vehicle factory. In December 2019, the facility was under construction after breaking ground in 2021. It will produce 40GWh annually.

Tesla uploaded a video last week of a new solar energy plant in Monterey County, California, with 240MWh of Megapack battery storage and 280MW of solar production, enough to power 100,000 households each year. Apple will use electricity from the Cal Flats solar farm.

Tesla production is growing in Shanghai. One of Tesla’s five (soon six) Gigafactories makes cars for the country and abroad. In addition, Tesla will be able to construct more Megapack energy storage units for local and global utility and renewable energy projects, including Belgium’s 100MWh energy storage facility, with the new Megafactory.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to create “a sustainable energy civilisation.” Tesla’s Investment Day last month invited investors to “invest in Earth.” The business thinks 240TWh of energy storage capacity is needed for sustainability.
