On May 1, OverDrive app users who digitally access a library’s collection must upgrade to Libby, a newer software from the same business that lets you borrow library ebooks for free.

OverDrive’s digital platform began in 2002 and operated separately when Libby launched in 2017. OverDrive, like Libby, distributes publisher books for free via a library’s OverDrive website.

On February 23, 2022, Apple, Google, and Microsoft uninstalled the OverDrive app. The business stated in-app discontinuance notices began in July.

As mentioned in this Question, OverDrive desktop users can still download audiobooks from libraries.overdrive.com website. Unfortunately, the corporation won’t supply new software downloads, although these books may be transferred to specialist MP3 players.

The business says it would stop developing OverDrive and shut it down to focus on Libby. The startup claims it would make it easier for libraries to advertise their digital resources and teach users by eliminating the duplication of maintaining two similar applications.

OverDrive’s Suggest to Library option will disappear from Libby. Libby supports multiple library cards, a unified bookshelf for all loans and holds, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and more.

OverDrive provides an online resource kit to help libraries and patrons migrate to Libby. Due to covid, American libraries and OverDrive have had to compete with publication powerhouses like Amazon and an accelerated digital transformation. As a result, Libby is one of the few free methods to read and listen to books, which can be a lifeline and a source of information.
