Telltale Games announced that The Wolf Among Us Season 2 will be coming in 2018, according to an update video on the Telltale Games official YouTube channel.
The announcement starts with some of the voice actors and developers who are apart of the series reading “mean tweets” from fans who have been asking for The Wolf Among Us Season 2 on Twitter.
The first season in the series, The Wolf Among Us, was a hit in the gaming industry. It has sold around one million copies on Steam, according to SteamSpy. On Steam, the game has over 15,000 overwhelmingly positive reviews, and has a score of 80 for PC on Metacritic.
“A fantastic, morally ambiguous detective tale that sometimes struggles to make its interactivity meaningful and fun,” said PC Gamer in their review of The Wolf Among Us. The full review of the game can be found here.
Not only did critics find The Wolf Among Us‘ story gripping and adventurous, but gamers fell in love with it, too.
“This game presents a gripping, suspenseful, dark, very mature and very complex detective story about a wolf in sheriff’s clothing solving a series of murders in Fabletown using his acute sense of smell, intimidation and wit, but nothing else, no high-tech gadgets,” said Steam user Globster.CZ. He recommended the game and 25 out of 28 users found his review helpful.
The Wolf Among Us was released back in 2014, so fans have had to wait several years before this announcement on The Wolf Among Us Season 2 and on how Bigby Wolf’s story will continue to play out after the open ending of The Wolf Among Us.
“Well I think one of the things that makes The Wolf Among Us so special is the general atmosphere of the game really commits to the detective story we are trying to tell,” said Chris Schoyer, a producer for The Wolf Among Us Season 2.
The Wolf Among Us is the canon prequel of the comic Fables, created and written by Bill Willingham and published by Vertigo (Vertigo is under DC Comics, but DC Comics couldn’t attach their name to the series because the content was too graphic). The game, along with the comic, follows Bigby Wolf’s journey as the sheriff of Fabletown, a fictional place in New York City during the 1980s.
“Fables is fantastic, it’s an award winning series and this was our own take on Bill Willingham’s work,” said Job Stauffer, head of creative communications for The Wolf Among Us when discussing how they changed some things around from Fables for the game. “This universe, this Fabletown, this iteration, everything was just bathed in neon.”
There is no specific release date for The Wolf Among Us Season 2 yet, only that it will be released sometime in 2018. Along with The Wolf Among Us Season 2 announcement, Telltale Games have also announced The Walking Dead: The Final Season and Batman: The Telltale Series Season 2. Telltale Games will be at San Diego Comic Con 2017, which is held from July 20 to July July 23, so hopefully fans will be able to find out more information on these upcoming seasons then.
I haven’t played The Wolf Among Us yet, but I have seen several gameplays of it on YouTube and I’m intrigued. The intense decision making and following the story of these characters in New York City during the 1980s, all while the characters are based off of fictional characters from fairytales is intriguing enough to peak my interest. If you are a fan of Telltale Games in general, or if you are interested in modern iterations of fairytales, I would recommend this game for you (plus if you haven’t played before, the wait between seasons won’t feel like forever).
