TikTok is exploring an in-app feature that makes generative AI avatars.

TechCrunch reported that TikTok is testing generative AI avatars. Matt Navarra, a social media expert, found the new tool. According to the business, the product is only evaluated in a few areas. TikTok is creating a Lensa-like app on its platform with this test product.

Navarra’s images show that the program would ask users to choose three to 10 photos to create avatars. You may use the tool once a day to make up to 30 avatars.

The program generates avatars using up to five styles when you input your photographs. Navarra said the program generates AI avatars in a few minutes. First, download one or more AI avatars. Then, you may add an avatar to your TikTok story or profile.

“We’re always thinking about new ways to add value to the community and enrich the TikTok experience as we continue to build a safe place that entertains, inspires creativity, and drives culture,” a TikTok spokesman told TechCrunch in an email. For example, we’re testing a new approach to generate and distribute TikTok profile photographs in a few locations.

TikTok’s content moderation algorithms will remove photographs that violate its Community Guidelines from avatars. Then, after a short time, TikTok deleted all uploaded photographs.

TikTok says its trials don’t always make it into the final product, and those that may look and feel different when they launch globally.

Lensa topped the U.S. App Store last winter as users worldwide shared beautiful self-portraits. Due to user demand for AI editing, several more “AI” applications entered the U.S. App Store’s Top Charts. As a result, AI photo editors occupied the top three U.S. App Store slots.

TikTok wants to add generative AI avatar capabilities to its platform after its popularity. AI picture applications are popular. However, artists have complained about Lensa AI sampling their work. By testing a restricted tool, TikTok may avoid criticism.

TikTok had already created a restricted version of a popular AI software. In August 2022, the business developed an in-app text-to-picture AI generator that allows customers to write in a prompt and get a video backdrop image.
