Apple is extending its new Siri AI experience to select older Apple TV 4K devices, allowing some existing users to access the upgraded assistant without purchasing the company’s latest streaming box. The feature will arrive as beta software through tvOS 27.2, expected this fall.
According to Engadget, compatibility will extend as far back as the second-generation Apple TV 4K, released in 2021. The move gives owners of supported devices a potential upgrade path as Apple expands its artificial intelligence and smart home offerings.
Siri AI Arrives on Older Streaming Devices

Apple unveiled a new Apple TV 4K on October 13, 2026, designed to support its updated Siri AI capabilities. However, the latest hardware is not the only route to the new software experience, as the company confirmed that several older models will also receive support.
The tvOS 27.2 update is expected to arrive before or around the new Apple TV 4K’s November 13 release, although Apple has not provided a precise rollout date for the software.
Questions remain about how much of the upgraded assistant will be available on older hardware. Previous Apple TV 4K models were not specifically designed around the new Siri AI experience and have less processing power than the upcoming model.
Hardware Differences Could Limit Features
One significant difference involves hands-free voice control. The new Apple TV 4K includes far-field microphones, enabling users to speak to Siri without needing to pick up the remote.
Older models do not have built-in microphones, although their remotes include microphones for voice commands. As a result, the hands-free experience available on the new device may not be replicated on earlier versions.
It is also unclear whether older Apple TV 4K models will support every smart home control introduced with tvOS 27.2. Apple had not clarified the full feature set for compatible legacy devices at the time of Engadget’s report.
Part of a Wider Smart Home Expansion
The software announcement came alongside several new products unveiled at Apple’s “Welcome Home” event. These include the HomeView smart home display, an updated HomePod Mini speaker and additional connected home devices, including a smart lock, cameras and a video doorbell.
Extending Siri AI to older Apple TV hardware could help Apple broaden adoption of its updated assistant without requiring every customer to buy a new device. However, the extent of that benefit will depend on which features Apple ultimately makes available across different generations of hardware.
For existing Apple TV 4K owners, the upcoming tvOS update offers the prospect of new capabilities through software alone, although some functions may remain exclusive to the latest model.
