Microsoft Offers Voluntary Buyouts to 60,000 Employees Amid AI Spending

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyout packages to eligible employees in selected parts of its business, potentially affecting around 60,000 workers — approximately a quarter of its global workforce.

Announced on Monday, October 26, the voluntary exit offer (VEO) is aimed at employees who may already be considering career opportunities outside the company. Although Microsoft has not given a direct reason for the programme, the move comes as it continues managing costs while investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure and data-centre expansion.

The offer will be available to qualifying employees in the United States, India, Canada and the United Kingdom. Microsoft employees at internal job level 70 or below may be eligible.

According to salary and career database Levels.fyi, levels 65–67 correspond to principal positions, while levels 68–70 cover partner and distinguished-level roles. Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said eligible organisations were selected based on their business priorities, customer commitments and workforce needs.

Microsoft’s Second Voluntary Workforce Reduction in 2026

This is the second time Microsoft has introduced a voluntary workforce-reduction programme in 2026. In April, the company offered a voluntary retirement package to 8,750 employees in the United States.

In July, Microsoft’s Xbox division also laid off approximately 3,200 employees, representing around 20 per cent of its gaming workforce.

According to CNBC, about 30 per cent of employees eligible for the April retirement offer accepted it, helping reduce the impact of planned layoffs, Coleman said.

While the earlier programme focused on long-serving employees who might have been nearing retirement, the new voluntary exit offer expands the initiative to a much larger potential pool of workers.

Microsoft May Make Voluntary Departures a Regular Option

Microsoft has signalled that voluntary departures could become a more regular part of its workforce-management strategy.

In comments to GeekWire in July, Coleman said the company was exploring ways to incorporate voluntary exits into its approach more consistently. She described the latest offer as an extension of lessons learned from the Voluntary Retirement Programme introduced earlier in the year.

Unlike compulsory layoffs, voluntary buyouts allow employees to decide whether to leave in exchange for financial support and other transition resources. For Microsoft, the approach provides another way to adjust staffing levels while giving workers greater control over their career decisions.

Following Google’s Voluntary Exit Strategy

Microsoft is not the only major technology company to use voluntary exit packages as part of its workforce strategy. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, reportedly offered similar packages to employees in selected business units in June and October 2025, and again in February 2026.

The approach gives eligible Microsoft employees a choice: accept the offer and pursue opportunities elsewhere, or remain with the company amid uncertainty about future workforce changes.

While Microsoft has not directly attributed the new programme to its AI investments, the timing comes as major technology companies continue spending heavily on artificial intelligence systems, computing infrastructure and data centres while seeking to manage operating costs.

Eligible Employees to Receive Email Notifications

According to Microsoft’s official announcement, employees eligible for the Voluntary Exit Offer were to receive an email containing details of the programme on October 26.

The announcement also comes shortly before Microsoft’s latest earnings report, scheduled for release after the stock market closes later in the week.

Investors will be watching the results for further insight into the company’s financial performance and its continued investment in AI infrastructure.

For eligible employees, the offer provides an opportunity to consider leaving Microsoft with financial support and career-planning resources. For the company, it represents another way to respond to changing business priorities and workforce needs without relying exclusively on compulsory layoffs.
